The Difference Between the Republicans
and the Rest of the World

by Michael Tivana ... 10-28-02

I receieved this message from a Republican friend during the election and had to respond. First the message to remind the people that the Democrats are taxing us to death.

Food for thought?
Subject: Social Security

Q: Which party took Social Security from an independent fund and put it in the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratic-controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which party put a tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic party.

Q: Which party increased the tax on Social Security?
A: The Democratic Party with Al Gore casting the deciding vote.

Q: Which party decided to give your Social Security money to immigrants?
A: That's right, the Democratic Party. Immigrants that move into this country at 65 get SSI and have never paid a dime into the system. This is costing us millions of dollars.

Then, after doing all this, the Democrats turn around and tell you the Republicans want to take your Social Security away from you. The worst part about it is that people forget who did what!

What can you do?

Circulate this to remind people so they'll remember it during the November vote.

To which I replied:
Which party started the income tax?

Lincoln and Taft were both Republicans. They called this a progressive tax because it taxed only the top 1% of the people because they could afford to pay taxes. Then the republicans lost control of their party - their ideals went down the drain and now the Republican Party is the party that is shifting the burden of taxation away from those that can afford it to those that can least afford it --- the working class through what are called regressive taxes.

How far the Party has shifted can be seen by a quote from the current Republican Sec. of the Treasury Paul O'Neill. "I absolutely support the elimination of taxes on corporations, and shifting the tax burden to individuals. Government would work better if it collected taxes in a more direct way from the people."

The current Republican ideal is all about the individual (me, me, mine, mine) and does not consider the common good of society. Taxes are the price of civilization and I am sorry that some do not want to pay taxes, especially those that can afford it. To them I say the extra money you earn from not paying taxes can go into building higher walls around your gated community.

Well you can't turn back the clock to Nazi Germany when this attitude last prevailed, or can you?

Please pass this along so we can all know what the real battle is all about in our society --- who will pay for the schools, roads, parks etc. If the people don't do it together then these services will be only for those that can afford them. Then the US will experince the pain of segregation once more - class segregation.
