The 2002 Election
by Michael Tivana ... 11-06-02

The rain returned to Seattle today, the day after an election that gave GW Bush control of the US Congress. The gray sky punctuates the somber mood that I feel as I witness GW continue to put the 'K' in Amerika. America is dying and has been for some time, and the 'Dream' is choking on its own negligence. The focus of the people is now on the individual, and it comes at the cost of the common good. This is the prevailing wind that blows over a landscape wrought with storms.

The off-year election wasn't an election, it was a vindication for Bush in the Y2000 election debacle. So what was it that swayed opinion to give Bush the coveted US congress? Was it the beating of the war drums? Or perhaps it was that one hour MSNBC special two days before the election about the Bush Family and how perfect they are. But no matter the reason whatis important now is the fact that the battle field has been altered and this requires new strategies, new plans.

Where to from here? New strategies to defend: the constitution, the progressive life-style, life on the planet. The fighters for peace and justice will find new ways to expose the attacks and the attackers, new ways to shout, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes." The election process is alive but over for now and the real battle still lies in the propaganda wars for the hearts and minds of the people. It is the people that decide what kind of a world we live in. It is the people that suffer or rejoice in the consequences of these decisions.

Our world will continue to see more ways to expose the truth and more ways to live the alternatives to the Bush war machine. More web sites, more alternative news programs on the radio and television, more funding for these programs, more newspapers and newsletters, more conversations with strangers, more protests marches, more questions being asked, more organic gardens, more advanced technology being used, more think-tanks to explore the strategies of the battles we are waging. We the people will continue to fight for what is right, it is our destiny.

We campaigned for Heidi for US Congress. To her credit she was not a typical politician, nor was she a party hack, or a cog in the corporate machine. She was the people's candidate, a ray of hope, something to believe in, a cause to get behind and work for that galvanized efforts to STOP the Bush whacker from shredding our country. We will move forward as we build upon the strengths that we gained from this election. The campaign for congress is over, but not the campaign for life on this planet.

Pray for the extinct species that they may find a time and place to return. Pray for the bombed villagers that they maintain their connection to the spirit of life. Pray for the enemies of life that they may some day come to their senses and stop raping, pillaging and deceiving. Pray for a future when life will prevail.
