Whose war is this anyway?

By Michael Tivana  Nov 27,2001

A country is only as great as its enemies.

Suspicions about this war called “Enduring Freedom” arise when it looks more and more like the war Bush’s father waged 10 years ago in Iraq. In The Gulf War the people that died were Hussein’s enemies and he remains with the Baaths soundly entrenched in Iraq. As we continue to kill off his enemies, the Shiites and the Kurds, Hussien grows as a potent evil enemy to the New World Empire. He was given weapons of mass destruction and encouraged to use them on his enemies and Iran. Hussein’s army is called the Republican Guard and at times I think he is referring to the old Republican guard that stock his soldiers with the wealth of all that the US has to offer.  Spiro Agnew sold the uniforms, Reagan and Bush the missiles and tanks. What our leaders lost in the Cold War they are getting back in the War on Terrorism, and that is enemies. Enemies are what make the military machine make sense. We have successfully replaced the communists with terrorists; welcome to the brave new world.

Is this not so today with Bin Laden and the Taliban? Just like in Iraq the people that are dieing are not the enemies of the US, but the enemies of our enemy. As the pro-Taliban conscripts are dieing fighting the Northern Alliance (alliance is not even a word in their language) and innocents die in between, the real Taliban have gone away. Some Taliban have remained behind to end this play in an appropriate way. The US citizen has to have some thread of justice or revenge will slip away, and satisfaction with the administration will be diminished. Now it is check mate time and the US Marines are involved. We will be told that the Taliban and Al Quaeda surrendered, were tried and some were executed. But with all the secrecy how will the world know if they were really brought to justice? Will they really be executed? Armed with a secret military tribunal and the press being executed, the Armies of Righteous Justice will act out their part under a stealth shield that not even CNN or Al Jazeera can penetrate. We will be told the story in Wag the Dog fashion. The truth will never be known and the truth will be bantered around conspiracy circles in the coming years just like Waco, King and JFK.

What is next in this endless war? The “Enduring Freedom” coalition will be chasing down Al Qaeda cells for years, conveniently using them to strike fear into the minds of the people of the world and will be propped up to be a worthy, evil and everlasting enemy. Blame the next car  bomb on Al Queda.

Meanwhile, the original Taliban have been allowed to fly, walk and ride to Pakistan. Still more have surrendered and been released to go home. The poor conscripts and Islam volunteers are slaughtered for uprising against the empire. The hospitals, schools and food warehouses will have to be rebuilt. Villages, mosques, TV stations and the entire infrastructure of a country of 22 million are gone. A third of the population is living in refugee camps or wandering the countryside dazed by bombs that took away their village and family. Now these people are desperate enough to welcome the temptations of the victors. They may even learn English on their way to worshipping the consumer economy. The way is paved for the expansion of the American empire. Americans can look forward to going to Kabul, staying at a Hilton and gorging on a street corner McDonalds. GOD this is a great country!
