On the morning of Feb. 20, carloads of Italian Carabinieri (paramilitary police) arrived at the offices of citizens' groups and unions in several Italian cities. Broad search warrants issued in Genoa identified the sites as "Indymedia offices." Officers reportedly seized computers and other records in an attempt to collect information related to the IMC's reportage of events related to the G8 summit in Genoa last fall. The Italy IMC quickly issued a press release stating that they have no offices, and denouncing the police action as an attempt to place political pressure on Indymedia.
Affected sites included offices in
Florence, Turin, Bologna and Taranto.

In other European IMC news, the Switzerland IMC has decided to go offline temporarily, following threats of legal action by the organization Aktion Kinder des Holocaust. The AKDH has accused the Swiss IMC [1 2 3] of publishing allegedly antisemitic material, namely a cartoon comparing Israeli treatment of Palestinians to the Warsaw Ghetto.
