Guadalajara, Mexico | June 1, 2004 | Torture techniques used at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq have
apparently been adopted with gusto by Mexican authorities
in Guadalajara, sight of the third summit of Latin
American, Caribbean and European leaders. Thousands of
demonstrators led by unions and students protested the
pro-neoliberal orientation of the summit in a largely
peaceful march and festival on Saturday. The daily
newspaper La Jornada identified a small group of
provocateurs led by the Frente Popular Revolucionario and
the Consejo General de le Huelga de la UNAM who damaged
property during the march.
Security forces responded with
overwhelming force, arresting at least 100 demonstrators,
including at least eight internationalists from the US,
Canada, and Spain. Firsthand reports from family members
and detainees indicate widespread abuse in five separate
prison facilities. Women are held naked while guards
threaten to rape them. Young men are beaten
repeatedly. Detainees have been denied sleep, food and
drink for at least the past 48 hours.
Several detainees reportedly suffered serious injuries at the hands of
officials and are denied medical attention. On Saturday afternoon the PAN Governor Francisco Ramirez Acuna announced, "There will be an iron hand (mano dura) against the detainees."
